Electronic tools can help elderly people to remain living independently and safely in their home for longer, as well as bringing peace of mind to families concerned about their loved one.
In Surrey, councils work in partnership with Surrey Telecare to provide a Community Alarm and Telecare Service. The service works through an alarm unit in an elderly person’s home, which is connected to a telephone helpline.
When an alarm is raised (through a wearable pendant, or other sensor), the helpline is called automatically and appropriate assistance is notified.
There is a small weekly charge for the community alarm. Please find your elderly relative’s borough or district council below for contact details and more information:

If somebody is aged over 60, lives alone, has limited mobility, has a hearing impairment, id blind or partially sighted or has a mental health condition, then they are at increased risk and vulnerability to fire.
If your loved one falls into at least one of these categories then we recommend organising a Home Fire Safety Visit.
Surrey Fire and Rescue provide a home visit service, which includes personalised advice about fire safety. This service is free, friendly, available 24/7 and they will even fit free smoke alarms during the visit if necessary.
Advice will be offered regarding:
- Cooking and smoking
- Heaters and heating
- Candles and fireplaces
- Detection systems (smoke and heat alarms)
- Bedtime checks
- What to do if there is a fire
