When someone dies, the family is left with the overwhelming task of selling and clearing out their loved ones home. For some this can be a cathartic exercise, while for others it can be incredibly stressful and overwhelming.
The clearing process will involve sorting through a life time of possessions, deciding what to keep and share with family members and ultimately what to do with everything that is left.
There are a number of charities across Norfolk that offer a house clearance service, with any profits going on to support their ongoing work.
Please note, the charities listed below vary in service and what they’ll take but all upholstered furniture needs to have the fire label attached for charities to legally sell the item.
Age UK Norfolk
Age UK Norfolk offer a furniture collection or house clearance service. They will pick up large items of furniture or white goods that are suitable for sale in their shops. Collections are free and they cover the whole of Norfolk.
They also offer a service to fully clear items from a house, saving you the trouble of multiple trips. All profit will be used to support local services for older people in Norfolk.
The Norfolk Hospice
The Norfolk Hospice offer a full or partial house clearance service, tailored to your individual requirements. They will first discuss the number of rooms that need clearing with you, as well as the type of items you need collecting and/or packing. They may visit to the property in advance to decide whether a fee will be required in order for them to remove non-saleable and non-recyclable items. Within 72 hours of this assessment, the team will arrange a convenient date with you for carrying out the house clearance.
Saleable items will be sold in their Hospice shops, so that pre-loved items are re-homed, whilst non-saleable items will be recycled. Non-saleable and non-recyclable items can still be taken away to make the process as easy and stress free for you as possible.
All money raised will help the charity to provide care for people in the local community.
Visit The Norfolk Hospice’s website for more information or call them on to arrange a collection.
British Heart Foundation

They can collect all sorts of items, including:
- Furniture such as sofas, beds, tables and chairs.
- Large and small electrical appliances.
- Clothing, shoes, accessories and jewellery.
- CDs, DVDs, books and homewares.
The cost of the collection will vary based on the scale and contents of the property. If you only want to remove a few items that are in saleable condition, you can book a free home collection.
